An artist, filmmaker and writer who utilizes queerness to consider the politics, desires, and fantasies lurking in and around digital technologies, Zach Blas takes on real world problems in order to consider their implications – whether they are absurd, horrifying or both. im here to learn so :)))))) (2017) resurrects the short-lived Tay, a Microsoft chatbot designed to imitate an American female millennial, shut down after internet trolls maliciously interfered with her machine learning abilities. In her new life, Tay muses on fembots, pattern recognition algorithms, neural networks, and counter-terrorism software. With The Doors (2019), Blas looks at enduring psychedelic influences on the California tech industry.

 

Zach Blas‌ ‌(born‌ ‌1981, Point Pleasant, West‌ ‌Virginia,‌ ‌USA)‌ lives and works in London. Blas studied‌ ‌at‌ ‌Boston‌ ‌University, Massachusetts; ‌The‌ ‌School‌ ‌of‌ ‌the‌ ‌Art‌ ‌Institute‌ ‌of‌ ‌Chicago, Illinois; ‌University‌ ‌of‌ ‌California,‌ ‌Los‌ ‌Angeles‌; ‌and‌ ‌Duke‌ ‌University, Durham, North Carolina, all USA.‌

I think of my work as conceptual, queer science-fiction. I am interested and motivated by transformation into the unknown, the opaque.
