A specialist in creating vocal sound, Hanna Tuulikki asks how the human voice can take on more-than-human qualities: ‘Can I sing bird? Can I sing water? Can I sing wind?’ Her body of work Away with the Birds (2015) explores birds of the Western Isles and the imitation of birds in Scottish Gaelic song poetry. The vocal composition was written for ten female singers. It evokes the birds pictured in her drawings – which are part of the British Art Show 9 exhibition in Aberdeen Art Gallery – and their sea, shoreline, cliffs, moor and woodland habitats. Inspired by the Isle of Canna, Voice of the Bird (2013) was first performed in the island’s harbour bay.
